In the small animal department we use our ultrasound scanning equipment in two ways.
We can use it as a way of looking inside our patients by way of abdominal scans to view organs such as the liver, spleen, stomach and intestines as a non-invasive procedure. This is beneficial to gain a fully rounded picture, for example, conventional x-ray pictures (or radiographs) of the heart only show the general outline shape of the heart and its size. However an ultrasound can show the thickness of the heart muscle walls and the actual movement of the heart valves.
Secondly we can use it for diagnosing pregnancy in small animals.
